Typica, a traditional island favorite, produces gentle floral aromas and a smooth, seductive finish of agave, grapefruit, and black pepper. This is a medium-bodied coffee with low acidity and is roasted at a full city (medium) roast.
HISTORY OF TYPICA The Typica variety is the most commonly grown variety in the Kona region on the big island. The current Typica variety was introduced to Hawaii in 1892 from Guatemala; beforehand, coffee farmers cultivated a Brazilian Typica now referred to as 'Old Hawaiian'. Old Hawaiian is still present on the islands but is less common than the Guatemalan Typica that is cultivated today At full maturity these Typica trees can grown upwards of 15 feet tall, but are commonly trimmed lower for easier harvesting. |

Maui island is often cherished for its road to Hana and the spectacular Haleakalā National Park. In days past, as in much of Hawai‘i, it was known for its vast fields of pineapple and sugarcane. As those crops departed, coffee began to rise again on Maui. There are now two significant regions growing coffee on Maui: Upcountry and Kā‘anapali.
